Outschool Tutoring

I offered online private reading tutoring for children between the ages of 6 and 12. When I first met with them, I used a series of assessments to determine areas for focus. Each week I tailored unique materials for their learning needs.

My background in Linguistics was helpful when I worked with new or struggling readers. Phonemic awareness is a big factor in gaining confidence for young readers. Once students had that foundation, we moved on to fluency and reading comprehension.

I created a series of games to help a new student make connections between letters and sounds. Visuals and interactive elements improve engagement and retention.

When I noticed a trend in a student’s reading, like mispronunciation of words with silent letters, I created a new resource and we explored that topic in our next meeting.

Many students rely on guessing and context clues to figure out unfamiliar words. I gave them strategies that allowed them to puzzle out the words accurately.

I had a student who loved to learn about butterflies. She was excited to read through all of the questions in this quiz because they incorporated her interests.

We read short stories that allowed me to assess student progress. After reading about two dogs who went for a swim, my student continued the story, imagining an incredibly detailed epic. Each week, we reread a chapter and then she told me what happened next. I created the new chapter with visuals and she read it the next week.

Every week she couldn’t wait to read her story and she was so proud of what she’d written.
